The Covenant of God – Open thy Mouth Wide
In this study we will be looking at hope, biblical hope.
Psalm 81:1-10
These people were delivered from Egypt (type of the world and bondage) and these people had a unique relationship to God.
“I am your God” Israel could expect God to take care of them due to covenant.
Open thy mouth wide... This is a picture of a nest of baby birds.
A picture of absolute weakness and dependency (open beaks)
An earnest expectation of hope
God is saying that He will be the mother bird and all Israel has to do is be a baby bird, open your mouths and I will fill them.
How can the baby birds sit there for hours, all day with open mouths?
The special relationship the mother has with the baby birds.
God has a special relationship with Israel He does not have with the other nations, it’s called covenant.
These birds have a positive assurance that with open mouths they will be filled. (expectancy) whatever they need they will receive.
This is real faith as understood through covenant
In this study we will be looking at hope, biblical hope.
Romans 15:13 – the God of hope – abounding in hope.
Hope is the essence of who we are as believers.
The word hope has been so misused in the English language.
It speaks more of a wish, I hope so... cross your fingers
The difference is certainty vs uncertainty (wait and see)
Hope for the best and expect the worse (today’s mindset)
Baby birds would not be so consistent if they lived by our kind of hope.
He is called the God of hope, meaning every word He speaks, every promise He makes, every purpose and plan cannot fail.
He never speaks with uncertainty. (It’s never the roll of the dice)
It is done in the moment of His thought/intention. It is so and waits manifestation.
The word hope does not carry with it its true meaning, so we use the word expectancy. It is an assurance, a knowing that it is done and therefore shall be.
When we meet the Lord, we come with perfect rest. (The birds never leave the nest) It is done, and nothing can stop Him, as the mother bird.
God is not double minded, He see’s singular, He sees what He has determined. (He loves me, He loves me not) we therefore are not double minded. As He is so we believe, trust and hope with an earnest expectation.
He never abandons a promise. (throws in the towel and walks away)
Hebrews 13:5 ampc
1 John 4:18 ampc
God is motivated by love, God is love, and shows us this love by making a covenant with us. 1 John 4:16
Romans 15:13 – the result of hope is joy and peace.
This is the Gospel
1 Cor 1:30 – Romans 14:17
This covenant is the union we share.
Jesus and the Father are One. (The Trinity) we are in Christ.
We share in all they are and have from the union.
Religion says, “If it be your will”
This would leave the baby birds wondering, and after time giving up.
Jesus is the will of God, covenant displays that will, we share in this.
Heirs of God, joint heirs with Jesus – Romans 8:17
Jesus is at the heart of hope – In Christ (160 times in the NT)
Separation – the lie, the deception if the devil is what keeps us from expectation, and we live hopeless
Identity is key to inheritance
You can take this to the bank!
